Flooding, landslides kill 22 in Nepal

Flooding and landslides brought on by two days of heavy monsoon rains in Nepal have killed 22 people and several more are missing, officials say. Home Ministry official Iswor Regmi said the death toll could rise from the rains that began over the weekend as reports pour in from remote villages, some of them several days' walk from the nearest town or telephone.

Situation in Sunsari and Saptari Districts, Eastern Nepal

1) Flooding: Two entire VDCs in Sunsari district, (Shree)Haripur and Shripur(javdi), as well as parts of Laukihi (Western part) and Paschhim Kushaha (wards 3, 4, 8 and 9) remain completely flooded by the Koshi River, after it broke out of its eastern embankment on 18 August, and has subsequently changed its course. Other VDCs in the area (Bhokraha, Madhuwan, Narshigha, Bashntapur and Dhuskighat) have experienced some limited flooding and are hosting displaced people. Saptari District has not been flooded as such, but has seen an influx of displaced people from Sunsari district, in particular to Bhadaha and Hanumannagar.


14 killed after heavy rains in India; death toll from monsoons rises to 79

Flooding, house collapses and lightning strikes caused by heavy rains killed at least 14 people in northern India, taking the reported death toll in the annual monsoon season to 79, officials said Sunday.

LUCKNOW, India (AP) -- Heavy rains lashed the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh state, flooding all the major rivers in the region, Surendra Srivastava, a police spokesman told The Associated Press in Lucknow, the state capital.


21 new lakes formed owing to China quake

Massive landslides resulting from the strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on May 12, 2008 in southwest China, have led to the formation of at least 21 lakes in various cities after land blocked the rivers flow. Water has been flowing over some of these blockages in Qingchuan county, but posed no danger.
